1 1 October 2009 has been confirmed as the date for the switchover to the new structure of workplace first aid training. From that date employers [following their own assessment] with need to choose from two training options; the First aid at work [FAW] or Emergency First Aid at Work [EFAW].
The FAW course will initially be 18 hours, with the EFAW being 6 hours long. Both courses will need a 3 hour Basic LIfe Support refresher after 1 year and again a year later, in the third year the FAW will require a 12 hour refresher and for the EFAW the initial course will be repeated.
Further guidance is due to be released bt the HSE by April 2009 to enable employers and training providers to prepare for the changes.
